Drug Free Poster Contest

This national calendar project is designed to involve children from kindergarten through high school in a joint effort to educate the nation's youth on the dangers of substance abuse. The contest is sponsored by AHMAs throughout the United States and the National Affordable Housing Management Association. With the support of the U.S. Department of HUD and USDA Rural Housing Services, the scope of the competition has increased dramatically, along with the number of calendars distributed to residents of affordable housing, thereby exposing at-risk children to positive role models and drug-free messages. The theme for the 2009 contest will be announced soon.

Contest Rules
Who is eligible to enter the calendar contest?
All children who are residents on a property which is owned or managed by a member of Mid-Atlantic AHMA.

How does the contest work?
Mid-Atlantic AHMAs selects three winning posters from each grade category. The four grade categories are based on the grade level the contestants have completed by June.

Kindergarten - 3rd grade
4th grade - 6th grade
7th grade - 9th grade
10th grade - 12th grade

All winning posters will be submitted to NAHMA where a panel of judges will select 14 winning posters that will appear inside the pages of the annual dru-free poster calendar. One special entry will be selected as the grand prize winning poster which will appear on the cover. All posters submitted to Mid-Atlantic AHMA become the property of Mid-Atlantic AHMA and we reserve the right to use the posters for publicity, publications and advertisements.

How are the posters judged?
Entries are judged on the artist's ability to create a poster with the "AHMA Drug-Free Kid" message that portrays the contest's theme (to be announced soon). Specifically judges consider:

Interpretation of the theme
Originality
Quality - Is the poster appealing to the eye?
Are the lines clean and are they colored in well?
Overall artistic ability - Does the poster show some degree of creativity and skill for its age group?
Will the colors be able to be reproduced with reasonable quality and clarity?
